Saying Thanks

One of the seminal works in Sociology is Goffman’s “Presentation of Self,” a tome on how we shape interactions to present ourselves to others.  Goffman likened people’s interactions to performances, with clothes as costumes, behavior as roles, and the setting as the context.  The goal for most, Goffman points out, is making a positive impression.

One low-cost methods of impression management is the art of the thank you, and there’s a great article on it in the Wall Street Journal.
